Description
This classical representation describes the starting of the Dharma Wheel. The moment when the historical Buddha sets the "wheel of doctrine" in motion with a teaching on the middle way between sensual pleasure and asceticism and on the four noble truths of suffering and its abolition. The original from the 5th century A.D. is in the Museum of Sarnat. Our representation is by the artist Marto, who is famous for his attention to detail. This object is made of basanite, a volcanic rock originating from central Java. It was carved from the full stone by experienced stonemasons. Natural colours, with natural rock inclusions
